C3M often develops scientific and engineering solutions that take into account interactions between physical phenomena on different time and length scales ranging from macro, meso, micro to nano. Many solutions have been developed for materials science, forming technologies, packaging industry, chemical engineering and pharmaceutics as well as geo- and biomechanics.
In the example provided below, causes for a macroscopic crack in a cold forming tool have been investigated by coupled two-scale damage analysis. This allows micro-mechanical interactions between spherical carbides and martensitic matrix to be analysed at the level of microstructure as a function cyclic loads at macro level. The animation shows forming of a bevel gear that produces cyclic macroscopic stresses in the tool and micro-mechanical stressed in the carbides. Matrix has been omitted for better insight to the carbides. |
